Please note SOCAL’s upcoming annual conference on Saturday, February 7, 2009. An exciting and informative program awaits you, and I look forward to your participation and that of your sister city members. This year’s theme is: ‘Building Global Connections: Focus on China; Focus on Africa. A varied group of presentations is planned with outstanding speakers including the Consul General of The People’s Republic of China, the Consul General of the Republic of Kenya, a Prince of Ghana, a director from the State Department, the Chairman of the Board of Sister Cities International and an executive from Proctor and Gamble. In addition a number of sister cities affiliations will be showcased. And traditional African fashions will be modeled. A continental breakfast and buffet lunch round out the program, as well as the opportunity to network and gain new ideas.        Promoting citizen diplomacy has never been more vital. Recognition of its increasing importance is spreading and plans are afoot for a presidential initiative on citizen diplomacy. The role of sister cities is more needed than ever. Our people to people approach has advanced the understanding of cultures and people globally. The work of each of your sister cities and their contributions increasingly is being recognized for its value in an ever changing world.                                  Join the excitement.
