This year Socal Sister Cities awarded scholarships to two students, Rachel Meeker, a graduate student at UC Riverside and Shant Gharachedaghi, an undergraduate student at UCLA. Besides having excellent academic records, both have been active in international organizations.
At the February 27th Socal Conference at the Huntington, Alan Lamson, Chair of the Scholarship Committee, introduced donor Keith Miller, who presented certificates to the two students along with checks for $750 to each.

Rachel Meeker
Schooling: Working on a Masters in Religious Studies at UCR: focus on gender and Islam.
International Experience: Worked as a program coordinator with Child Leader Project in India during summer of 2009. The project seeks to develop leadership among India’s children by training them in topics such as non-violence and conflict resolution.
While in India, she visited Hyderabad, a sister city of Riverside, for first time during the month of Ramadan and the Hindu celebration of Ganesha. She’s looking forward to working with the CLP in Hyderabad next summer. |

Shant Gharachedaghi
Schooling: Attending UCLA. Major in Asian Humanities with a concentration in Japanese and Korean, both of which languages he is studying.
Burbank Sister City: He’s been active with the sister city association since 2004. He was selected to travel to Ota, Japan in 2005 as student delegate and has been active with that sister city group. He looks forward to working on a farm in Japan this summer.
