"2010 Summer Camp" at Big Bear Lake to host Turkish-American youth
Long Beach, Ca., May 2, 2010
“2010 Summer Camp,” a tailored summer camp program and tour of Southern California, will host Turkish-American youths ages 12-17 in a fun-filled outdoor and sightseeing experience.
Organized by the Izmir-Long Beach Sister Cities Association and hosted by the YMCA of Greater Long Beach, the core of the summer camp invites Turkish-American youth for a 10-day days of camp stay at Camp Oakes in Big Bear and more. The camp will run June 24 through July 9, 2010, and August 11 through August 26, 2010.
“This is a once-in-lifetime opportunity for the Turkish-American youth from all corners of the United States to get together, make new friends and discover our sister city Long Beach and its well-established YMCA organization,” said Dennis Aytekin, chairman of the Izmir-Long Beach Sister Cities Association. “This will unite the Turkish-American youth.”
The tailored camp activities—under supervision of seasoned Camp Oakes counselors—will feature water sports, horseback riding, archery and riflery, high- and low-rope challenge courses, climbing wall, arts and crafts, astronomy programs at the camp’s own observatory, and nature hikes. The accommodations and all meals will be provided by Camp Oakes, a site owned and operated by YMCA since 1954.
In addition to the camp stay, the campers will get the opportunity to participate in the sightseeing activities that will include day-long visits to historic Queen Mary, the Aquarium of the Pacific, Disneyland Theme Park and a coastal tour on a London-style double-decker open-roof bus.
The program is also offered to school students based in Turkey.
An ideal summer camp, winter camp, outdoor learning center and retreat/conference center, the YMCA Camp Oakes is located 9 miles southeast of Big Bear Lake on Highway 38 and Lake Williams Road. More information about Camp Oakes can be found at www.campoakes.org.
Sign up deadline: May 24, 2010. Contact us at izmirlb@gmail.com or (714) 841-3932.

Dear Sister Cities International Members:
By now many of you are aware that Sister Cities International was awarded a $7.5 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to launch a major program to support urban communities in Africa. With this funding, approximately twenty-five U.S. cities will work with their sister city counterparts throughout Africa to address development issues over the next three years. This foundation grant represents the largest grant ever received by Sister Cities International.
This past week, we officially announced the seven U.S. cities and their African counterparts who were selected to complete Phase 1 of the Africa Urban Poverty Alleviation Program (AUPAP). Below you will find the official press release regarding the announcement. You can also view the complete program web page here: http://www.sister-cities.org/africa..
In spring of 2010, Sister Cities International will begin the application process for the second round of projects. Up to 20 additional programs will be selected and will begin their projects on a rolling basis.
This is a wonderful recognition of the Sister Cities model and the impact we can have with our work. Thank you for all of your time and energy to advance the Sister Cities International mission.
Best,
Patrick Madden
